The Children of Benjamin Branscomb:
Martha C. Branscomb (ďPatsyĒ)
The line of descent for Martha Branscomb:
(Note: Hereinafter the first three digits of the identification numbers are omitted. Please check the Author's Notes for an explanation of the numbering system I use for identifying individuals within any family.)
5. Martha C. Branscomb ("Patsy"), b. 29 December 1822 VA, d. 10 July 1842 OH
The Jackson Co. marriage records show that Martha married 8 February 1842 James Hatton (b. 28 December 1824 in Pocahontas, VA; d.19 April 1875 in Jackson). James was the s/o Thomas Hatten and Elizabeth Wanless. The dates for Martha come from her grave marker in the Mt. Zion Cem. in Jackson, OH: d. 10 July 1842. Hers was the first death of an adult in the family. On one side of her grave marker is the badly weathered stone thought to be Benjaminís; beyond that marker is her mother Tabithaís stone. Marthaís grave marker is also weathered, but the DOD is legible, as is the inscription ďage 19 years, 6 months and 12 days.Ē Apparently Martha died soon after her son John was born. Because Johnís recorded dates are in conflict with the dates given on Marthaís grave marker, some uncertainty exists.
As shown above, James Hatton, age 30, b. VA, and his son John, age 6, b. OH, are listed in the 1850 census for Benjamin and Tabitha. The age for neither James nor John matches the other data available for them. The 1870 census for Lick Twp shows the remarried James Hatten in dwelling #11, next door to the family in which Frances Hunsinger was residing. (For more about Frances, see #41 George W. Branscomb. Also see "The connection between Branscombs and Hunsingers".) Jamesís birth state was shown as West Virginia (formed from VA in 1863), and his age was given as 47, which approximates more closely a DOB of December 1824 but still is inexact. His second wife, as shown by the census, was named Frances, age 33, b. OH. Jamesís son John W. was still at home, and five younger children, ages 2 through 11, were present.
The child of Martha Branscomb and James Hatton/Hatten:
- 51. John W. Hatten, b. July 1842 (?) in Jackson, d. 22 March 1914 in Evanston, Uinta Co., WY. Md. in Jackson Co. 24 May 1879 Susannah F. Stiffler (b. 25 January 1849 in Jackson Co., d. 28 February 1940 in Silverlake, Los Angeles Co., CA); both bur. Evanston Cem., Uinta Co. Susannah was the d/o George Stiffler and Julia Ann Strope and the sister of Adeline Stiffler who md. #71 Earl Alonzo Branscomb.
John recorded his DOB in his family Bible as 10 October 1844 (data from Jenny Smith). There can be little doubt that his mother was Martha Branscomb, and it seems likely that she died, probably in childbirth, in July 1842. The 1850 census shows Johnís age as 6 years, and the1870 census shows his age as 25 (b. ca. 1845), the DOBs for John are compatible with each other but are incompatible with the stated DOD for Martha.
Benjaminís will, as quoted above, stated that his grandson John Hatton was to have the share in his estate of Johnís mother.
On 7 April 1879 John Hatten gave a (quit claim?) deed to his uncle Benjamin Branscomb (Jr.). It was recorded in Jackson Co. Deed Book 14, p 388. The deed itself is not available.
It is likely that the official records of Uinta Co., WY, can provide more details for John and his family.
The children of John & Susannah:
- 511. Jesse W. Hatten, b. 8 November 1885 in Uinta Co., WY; d. 20 October 1835 in Salt Lake City, UT; bur. Evanston Cem. Md. in Uinta Co. 26 August 1909 Anna Lannon (b. 24 February 1888 in Pueblo, CO; d. 17 January 1968 in Conoga Park, Los Angeles Co., CA; bur. Forest Lawn Cem. in Hollywood Hills). Anna was the d/o Charles A. Lannon and Edith Lamb. Jesse & Anna had six children: Alice, Marguerite Anna, Jessie Mae, Hazelmae, Elmer J. and Betty Marie.
- 512. Edgar Oren Hatten, b. in Uinta Co. 11 June 1890, d. 14July 1971 in Los Angeles; bur. Forest Lawn Cem., Hollywood Hills. Md. (1) in Fremont Co., WY, 1 August 1916 Gertrude F. (H?) Bybee (b. 28 December 1898 in Fremont Co., d. 15 April 1919 in Uinta Co.; bur. Fremont Co.). Gertrude was the d/o Charles L. and Maggie Bybee. Edgar and Gertrude had no children. Edgar md. (2) in Summit Co., UT, 23 May 1925 Eva Mae Davies (b. 22 December 1907 in Uinta Co., d. 24 April 1986 in Glendale, CA; bur. Forest Lawn Cem., Hollywood Hills.) Eva was the d/o William Davies and Hulda Elisabeth Kohlstrom. Edgar and Eva had two children: Edgar Milton and Amber Loraine.
