The Children of Benjamin Branscomb and Tabitha Seward

Benjamin’s will provides a definitive list of his children with the possible exception of any children who may have predeceased him and who died without issue; no such children are shown in the census data or elsewhere . The will lists the daughters after the sons, as was common practice; the reason probably being that the surname for the sons could be written once for all of them. For some reason, for his sons Benjamin listed Henry out of birth order. Among the daughters, Martha, who had died, was mentioned last. The following order of birth can be deduced from various census data.

  1. Joseph Edmond Branscomb (1816-1865)
  2. Ervin Ruffin Branscomb (1817?-1879?)
  3. Joanna Branscomb (1819-1896)
  4. Henry Branscomb (1820-1886)
  5. Martha Branscomb (1822?-1842?)
  6. Parthenia Branscomb (1825-1910)
  7. Benjamin Branscomb (Jr.; 1830-1911)
  8. William Branscomb (1833-1921)
  9. Tabitha Branscomb (b. ca. 1842)
